Bloc calls for sanctions against Eritrea

IOL, South Africa July 9, 2009 Addis Ababa - Six-nation east African body IGAD on Wednesday called on the UN Security Council to impose sanctions against Eritrea which is accused of arming Islamist insurgents in Somalia, an Ethiopian government statement said. Ethiopia, which currently holds the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) presidency, called a meeting on Tuesday in Addis Ababa to discuss the situation in Somalia where the insurgents are waging a deadly offensive. "IGAD calls on the UN Security Council to take urgent measures in order to achieve lasting peace and stability in Somalia," said the statement released on Wednesday by the Ethiopian Foreign Affairs Ministry. The African Union last week at a summit in Sirte, Libya, called on the UN Security Council to impose sanctions on Eritrea. The final declarations of the AU summit voiced the bloc's "full support" to Somalia's internationally backed government, which is battling the insurgency led by the hardline Islamist group Shebab. The 53-member grouping called on the UN Security Council "to take immediate measures, including the imposition of a no-fly zone and sea blockade, in order to prevent foreign elements from entering Somalia."

I am removing your comment. You misrepresented this as a personal statement. It is an official statement of the Eritrean government, which has been posted on this site with an honest attribution. Concealment and deception of sources are not welcome on this site.
