Ethiopian athletes dominated on Sunday at the 31st Istanbul Eurasia Marathon, the world’s only intercontinental marathon.
Kasime Adilo Roba of Ethiopia came in first among men with a time of 2:12:14, while his compatriot Bizunesh Urgesa of Ethiopia was ranked first in women's category.
Faisal Bader Shebto of Qatar was the runner-up in the men’s marathon and Joseph Kahugu of Kenya came in third.
Urgesa, who finished in 2:32:45, was followed by fellow Ethiopian Ashu Kasim and Svetlana Semova of Russia in the women’s division.
In the 15 kilometer race, Henok Teseaye Heyi of Ethiopia and Mare Ibrahimova of Azerbaijan won the men’s and women’s categories, respectively.
Apart from the marathon and the 15km race, the event included a fun run, where amateur running enthusiasts could participate to a shorter version of the marathon route.
All events started on the Asian side of Istanbul and ended on the European side, passing many of the city’s most beautiful sights. The finish line for the marathon and the 15 kilometer race was at the Hippodrome, one of the oldest sporting arenas in the world, decorated with many historical monuments including the 3500-year-old Egyptian Obelisk of Theodosius.
In somber news, a participant in the fun run committed suicide by jumping off of the Bosphorus Bridge, Anatolia news agency reported. Witnesses said that a male jumped from the bridge at about 10 a.m. and the body sank after it floated for about a minute. The deceased was yet to be identified. Istanbul Police Department announced that it has begun to search for the body in the Bosphorus.
