Sudan, Ethiopia renew fuel supply deal

Reporter, Ethiopia January 16, 2010 Hayal Alemayehu Sudan Petroleum raises supply Ethiopia and Sudan last week renewed the benzene supply agreement they entered into five years ago before the initial deal expired, it was learnt. Sudan has, pursuant to the initial agreement, been supplying eighty percent of Ethiopia’s benzene consumption, the balance being imported from the Middle East and other destinations abroad via the port of Djibouti. With the benzene bills from the neighboring country found more attractive compared to that of imports from abroad (as fuel import bills from abroad include inspection and vessel prices), the Ethiopian Petroleum Enterprise (EPE) had five year ago shifted to Sudan for the chunk of the country’s benzene consumption. As the initial deal between the two parties drew to expire, the Ethiopian Petroleum Enterprise, the sole importer of the country’s fuel consumption, and Sudan Petroleum, the benzene supplier, had accordingly signed a one-year renewal agreement last week. Presently, Sudan Petroleum is the sole supplier of benzene to the country as EPE did not strike any deal with other companies, according to informed sources. The Sudan oil company has in the meantime raised the volume of benzene it supplies to EPE to over eighty-two percent of the country’s overall consumption, while there is a plan for a net import of benzene from Sudan, according to sources. EPE has planned to import 2,176,188 tonnes of fuel including benzene for the current fiscal year with a projected budget of 19.2 billion birr. Compared to the previous, this year’s fuel import is up by eight percent while the bills inflate by nearly five billion birr.
