Ethiopia to Import 80,000 Tons of Sugar This Year, Fortune Says

Bloomberg March 1, 2010 Jason McLure Ethiopia will import 80,000 metric tons of sugar in the 12 months through July 7 to alleviate shortages, Fortune reported. Efforts by the state-owned Ethiopian Sugar Development Agency to limit retail prices to 13.50 birr ($1.01) per kilogram (2.2 pounds) have failed as prices have risen to 18 birr, according to the Addis Ababa-based newspaper, which cited Habtamu Reggassa, an agency official. The agency expects international sugar prices to drop in April following increases in supply from Brazil, Fortune reported.
