The Addis Ababa City Administration is set to completely change the appearance of Maskal Square, the grand square at the heart of the metropolis, with a total outlay of 50 million birr in the coming three years.

With the construction mania in full swing around the country and Addis in particular, the look of Maskal Square will be overhauled project and redesigned to incorporate a new square scheduled to be completed in three years.

The municipality had invited architects and engineers last September to submit creative designs for Maskal Square and another square in front of the headquarters African Union (AU) around Sar Bet, together with an interchange road. However, only seven designs were submitted of which five were selected to be finalists. Out of these three were for Maskel Square while two were for theAU project.

The designers who stood first, second and third for the Maskal Square project were awarded 80, 60 and 40 thousand birr, respectively, while the design that stood second and third in the AU project received a cash prize of 15 and 10 thousand birr, respectively, as there was no first place category.
